Opening for Part-time Organizer Interns

Families for Freedom (FFF) is a multi-ethnic network of immigrants formed in New York City in 2002 to respond to the devastation on our families wrought by the increases in deportation after immigration laws were drastically overhauled in 1996. Those new laws replaced a largely discretionary system with mandatory detention and deportation. FFF has worked tirelessly to ensure that those directly impacted are at the forefront of the movement to realize immigrant rights as human rights. Through organizing and uniting directly affected families, FFF mission is to create a space for support work, education and advocacy efforts that will change the unjust laws that target our communities.

Families for Freedom seeks an experienced organizer for a part-time position that will focus on retention, recruitment and base building. The organizer will work primarily with the Executive Director. The organizer will also work closely with member leaders, and on occasion, with allies and funders.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach and community education drives in at risk communities.

  • Support the campaign work of member leaders, including strategic campaign development, press and media relations, and generate materials.

  • Develop membership structures.

  • Expand leadership development opportunities.

  • Identify, train and develop member leaders.

  • Build and partner with ally organizations to garner support and win campaigns.

  • Must be willing to travel for work as needed.

  • Assist formerly detained individuals ,detained individuals and at risk individuals with services.

  • Organizers are responsible for running monthly membership meetings and family circles.

  • Create daily agendas of your goals and duties for each day and provide an end of the day report at the end of each work day .

  • Organizers are responsible for getting supplies to and from each action or outreach.

  • Attending job related training, meetings and webinars as needed

  • Coordinate membership base events.

  • Provide administrative support.

Qualifications:

  • Have at least 2 years of organizing and campaign experience

  • Have at least 3 years of experience working with immigrant families and/or formerly incarcerated individuals

  • Spanish speaking is a plus – strong oral and written skills

  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Be comfortable with a flexible work environment and be able to work some nights and weekends

Opening for Board Member: Families for Freedom

Families for Freedom is a NYC-based human rights organization by and for families facing and fighting deportation. We are immigrant prisoners (detainees), former immigrant prisoners, their loved ones, or individuals at risk of deportation. FFF has evolved into an organizing center against deportation. We are a source of support, education, and campaigns for directly affected families and communities - locally and nationally. We come from dozens of countries, across continents. FFF seeks to repeal the laws that are tearing apart our homes and neighborhoods; and to build the power of immigrant communities and communities of color, to provide a guiding voice in the growing movement for immigrant rights as human rights. That effort includes campaigns to pass the Clemency Justice Act in New York State and the New Way Forward Act on the Federal level.

Job Description

Families for Freedom is currently seeking people who care about immigrant families to join our Board of Directors, to utilize their expertise assisting Families for Freedom in raising awareness about the impact of immigration laws and systems on immigrant families and communities of color. The primary responsibilities of a Board member is to advise, govern, oversee policy and direction, and assist with the leadership and general promotion of the organization in order to support Families for Freedom’s mission, vision and strategic goals. Members of the FFF Board of Directors serve in a voluntary capacity and there is no monetary compensation. We are looking for people motivated to volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of immigrant families.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Organizational leadership and advisement

  • Personnel evaluation and staff development

  • Formulation and oversight of policies and procedures

  • Determine, monitor, and strengthen the organization's programs and services

  • Financial management, including adoption and oversight of the annual budget

  • Fundraising leadership, activities and promotion of the organization

  • Ensure adequate resources

  • Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability

  • Recruit and orient new board members and assess board performance

  • Attendance at quarterly board meetings

  • Devoting 3-5 hours per month to serve on a committee or lead a special project Qualifications Job Qualifications / Requirements:

    • Make a two-year commitment to Board service

    • Participate on a standing committee of the board, and serve on ad-hoc committees as necessary

    • Be alert to community concerns that impact the Families for Freedom organization and its members

    • Help communicate and promote Families for Freedom’s mission and programs

    • Become familiar with the organization’s finances, budget, and financial/resource needs

    • Broad network of peers, contacts, resources and references

    • Actively recruits donors, stakeholders and allies

    • Financially support the organization in a manner commensurate with one's ability.

Education and/or Experience:

● Experience with board governance and compliance requirements

● Experience at the board level or senior company management in non-profit

● Energetic, curious, inquisitive

● Innovative while also understanding resource constraint

● Ability to work constructively with Board and Executive Director to make decisions which are in the best interests of the organization and it’s membership

● Familiarity with the immigration detention and deportation system and transformative justice movements a plus.

Estimated hours required per week: 1-2 hours

Desired Skills And Experience:

We are hoping to find a Board member with a commitment to elevating the strength of immigrant families and BIPOC communities. Ideally this person will be a team player with a natural inclination towards problem-solving and not only contribute suggestions but assist our leadership in the planning and implementation of concrete action items. No previous Board experience required, but helpful if applicant comes with a consulting background or job experience in non-profit management, education and/or movement work and a good understanding of nonprofit funding mechanisms
