[May 8, 2023] Families for Freedom’s Statement on the killing of Jordan Neely

On May 1, 2023, Jordan Neely, a Black New Yorker native who had been experiencing homelessness and untreated mental illness, was brutally placed in a chokehold by a white supremacist, which lasted seven minutes as he desperately pleaded for basic necessities. On numerous occasions, local law enforcement reported Neely complaining about his physical and mental wellbeing. However, it is evident those concerns were not acknowledged.

In November 2023, Mayor Adams announced a new initiative to combat homelessness, while treating those with untreated mental health issues. This plan would unjustly transport individuals experiencing mental health illness, without their consent to hospitals. Mayor Adams didn't acknowledge that this plan wouldn't address the needs of those experiencing homelessness and untreated illness.

Jordan Neely and many Black and Brown people have been failed by the system. These individuals were in need of expeditious medical attention, but the city has deemed them a threat to society, without taking accountability for the harm and neglect the city has done to this population. Jordan Neely and many others deserve to receive basic human rights — food security, medical care, and housing. Neely's perpetrator, a white supremacist deserves to face immediate consequences for his actions. Families for Freedom stands in solidarity with other grassroots organizations and Neely's community as we demand justice for Neely.
