American Immigration Lawyers Association

Catholic Charities Immigration Services: also provides new immigrants who are seeking help and refuge. The type of help/ assistance they provide are for the

following categories: youth, food, housing, families, immigrants and refugees, people with disabilities. Further information can be found in their website.

Language Access

The New York State Office for New Americans provides “Opportunity Centers” where different free services can be provided such as: English-for-Speakers-of-other Languages (ESOL) classes, naturalization support, entrepreneurial training, and workshops.

The Multi-Lingual New York State New Americans Hotline: 1-800-566-7636

Monday-Friday from 9am to 8pm

This Hotline provides free and confidential information to new migrants; as well as provides individuals with referrals to free English language classes, legal services, and more.

Report Crime & Discrimination

If you, or someone you know experiences discrimination across the state.

You can file a complaint with the State Division of Human Rights by calling the hotline: 1-888-392-3644 from 9am to 5pm Monday-Friday.

Report Human Trafficking:

If you suspect that you or someone you know may be a victim of human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline: 1-888-373-7888.

Help can be provided in 170+ languages, and all information will be confidential.

If you or someone you know may be a victim of domestic violence, call the New York State Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-942-6902

Health Services

Some health centers offer checkups and sick visits despite a person’s ability to pay, insurance status, or immigration status.

You may call 311 or visit the Find a Health Center to see the best options near you.

Some immigrants are eligible for health insurance based on your immigration status. In order to verify if you qualify visit the New York State of Health.

In addition, undocumented immigrants can receive medical care at urgent care clinics, public hospitals, and emergency rooms regardless of their immigration

status. You should ask about the expected out of pocket cost, but remember if a medical Emergency occurs, public hospitals and emergency rooms will attend you.

Education for the Youth

Anyone over the age of 5 and under 21 who has not received a high school diploma has the right to free public education no matter their immigration status.

You can call 311 to determine what school district or school zone you reside in that will best suit your child and family.

Housing

All New Yorkers are expected to receive the same opportunities for housing regardless of their immigration status. Landlords cannot: refuse to rent an apartment because of someone’s immigration status, national origin, or religious belief. Landlords also can’t fail to make adequate repairs or provide equal services to tenants because of their immigration status, religious belief, etc.

The RDJ Refugee Shelter is a shelter in NYC specifically for asylum seekers and refugees who are experiencing homelessness. You can learn about The RDJ Refugee Shelter by clicking here.

Seniors in need of immediate assistance and resources should start with 2-1-1 to connect with United Way, which is committed to helping homeless seniors find local shelters or access transitional housing. The service can also connect seniors with other resources, including those intended to provide food, mental health support or funding for health care expenses. Additionally, 2-1-1 intakes are often required as a prerequisite before trying to get into a shelter or obtaining other assistance.
