Statement from Families for Freedom on ICE Presence at Rikers Island
Families for Freedom strongly condemns the recent decision to allow U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to establish a presence at Rikers Island. This move is not only a betrayal of the hard-fought efforts to remove ICE from our communities, but it also represents a glaring disregard for the rights and dignity of migrants seeking safety and opportunity.
Under the leadership of Mayor Eric Adams, we expected a commitment to protect vulnerable populations and uphold humane treatment for all, yet this decision turns its back on those values. Allowing ICE to operate within Rikers violates the principles of justice and compassion that we strive to uphold as a society. It subjects migrants to the risk of double jeopardy, facing the threat of both criminal and immigration enforcement.
We recognize that our fight is far from over. Families for Freedom will continue to advocate for the rights of migrants, ensuring that they are treated with the respect they deserve. We call on Mayor Adams and city officials to reverse this harmful decision and reaffirm their commitment to protecting all members of our community.
In solidarity,
Families for Freedom
